Twice a year Microsoft releases a new version of Dynamics 365 Business Central. In April, Business Central 22 will be launched as part of the Dynamics 365 release wave 1 in 2023 upgrades. The upgrades in the new version make Business Central even more integrable, more user-friendly and faster to get started with, for both new and experienced users.

Microsoft is introducing new features and upgrades in Business Central 22 that automate regulatory tasks, helping companies worldwide stay compliant with various government regulations so they can focus on their core business. For example, the W1-version adds support for non-deductible VAT, and then adds it in phases to the Microsoft country versions that support VAT.

As always when a new version of Business Central is launched, Microsoft has also in 2023 release wave 1 focused heavily on ease of use. In Business Central 22, Microsoft will increase user efficiency when working with lists of records. This means that in Business Central 22 you will be able to customize columns by adding any field from the table, use mass actions on several rows and get more comprehensive views to work smarter and thus faster.


Note that with Dynamics 365 release wave 1 in 2023, Microsoft introduces AL Explorer in Visual Studio Code. This addition provides seamless development collaboration through GitHub and adds self-service capabilities for administrators tasked with managing apps and environments. Microsoft will also enable us ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to transact through the AppSource marketplace.

New functions in Business Central 22

Below you have an overview of the new features and capabilities that are planned to be released with Dynamics 365 release wave 1 in 2023 from April 2023 to September 2023. Please note that there may be deviations in the release times, so the features are not released on a specified time or that the expected functionality is not released at all.

Rapid adaptation with Microsoft Power Platform

Business Central 22 makes it easier to set up repetitive approval workflows in Dynamics 365 Business Central. This means that it will be even easier to automate a number of business processes, so that your employees, rather than spending their time on trivial tasks, can instead spend their time on developing your company and business. With Business Central release wave 1 in 2023, Microsoft is also providing trial apps, helping Power Apps developers get up and running faster.

With the release wave 1 in 2023 upgrades, the integration between Business Central and the business app platform Power Platform is improved, increasing the productivity of your company.

Application improvements

With release wave 1 in 2023, Microsoft will deliver a series of application updates based, among other things, on the most popular requests for improvements by BC users. In the area of financial management, Microsoft has invested in intercompany capabilities and with Business Central 22 now provides the possibility of general ledger settlement. With release wave 1 in 2023, it will also be possible to export SAF-T audit files in all countries. Supply chain functions have also been given a boost with Business Central 22 and have been improved with several optimizations that let you run your warehouse and storage processes more smoothly and efficiently.

Overall, the many new application functions and improvements have been added to increase business productivity, create a better overview and also enable compatible accounting and reporting.

Countries and regions

With Dynamics 365 2023 release wave 1, Microsoft continues the country and region expansion of Business Central, meaning that the solution has now been added to more than 100 countries and regions. The expansion of Business Central to more countries and territories is largely achieved through partner-led localization. The Business Central partner network builds relevant localization apps and publishes them through AppSource. This, combined with the built-in language offerings, means that Business Central is now available to serve customers in even more countries and regions worldwide.

Business Central is available in more than 130 countries and Microsoft also provides all statutory feature updates to countries where they are responsible for localization

Development

Developers are in high demand, and Microsoft therefore wants to increase productivity among Business Central AL developers. Therefore, with Dynamics 365 2023 release wave 1, a number of features are added to Business Central to enable developers to work more efficiently. In addition, Microsoft is adding a number of capabilities in Business Central 22 that aim to empower consultants, citizen developers, and users to be more self-driving and thus do more to relieve developers, increase flexibility, and lower the cost of customizations.

By adding visual abstractions on top of AL code that allow developers and consultants to easily get an overview of and navigate across all AL objects in a workspace or project, with Dynamics 365 2023 release wave 1, Microsoft has improved the user experience of Visual Studio Code. This new addition helps developers better understand application boundaries and makes it easy to jump directly to a source or run objects. Business Central developers get better compiler resource management and code analyzer performance, as well as the ability to attach with the normal debugger to user sessions.

With Business Central 22, Microsoft also enables AppSource publishers to release preview apps to selected customers, get better runtime package management and, not least, monetize their apps via the AppSource Marketplace. Users also get the option to add existing table fields to existing pages as code-free personalization or customization.

Legislation

With the Dynamics 365 release wave 1 upgrade of Business Central, Microsoft delivers regulatory updates based on the most popular user requests for improvements in the area of regulatory compliance management. Microsoft brings features and regulatory automation to meet the various regulations set by government agencies, allowing business users to focus on their business and core business. In the future, Microsoft plans to take a step toward standardized functionality so that all of these enhancements are delivered as standard features across all supported countries and regions where the functionality is relevant.

Microsoft's primary focus of regulatory efforts in Business Central 22 is on non-deductible VAT in the base application. Both features are available in some locations, but are required in almost all regions. The features will be standardized and made available as extensions, making it easy for partners to add them if needed.

Onboarding

Today, companies to a great extent expect out-of-the-box user experiences when selecting new business solutions. That's why onboarding is a key area of focus for Microsoft in each new Dynamics 365 release wave. Better onboarding experiences allow business users to get up and running with Business Central in minimal time with minimal effort.

By leveraging better out-of-the-box data content and user assistance elements, companies with the D365 2023 Release Wave 1 upgrades can get up and running with Business Central even faster.

Many of the standard tooltips are enhanced to help self-learning users understand how to use Business Central. Microsoft is updating the look and feel of tooltips in Business Central 22 to present them to users in a modern way and also updating their content. This improvement goes hand in hand with an update of localized master data such as the Chart of Accounts for selected countries.

So whether you as a user need to enter business data at high speed, randomly update your entries or analyze relational data, Business Central offers a wide range of functions that are both efficient and easy to get started with.

Every time Microsoft releases a new version of Business Central, improvements to usability, availability, performance, and reliability are introduced. Business Central 22 increases efficiency when working with actions and lists of records. Microsoft has also given customers and consultants the opportunity to personalize the fields on a page by choosing from existing table fields, making it easier and faster for them to optimize their workspace.
